After a brown Christmas, winter threatened to disrupt our departure yesterday. Fortunately, it came mostly as rain in the twin cities and it only added about 15 minutes for deicing to the duration of our (otherwise on-time) first flight. When I booked our flights back in June, it was about $200 cheaper to make our first leg into Fort Lauderdale, but since we have an early morning flight out of Miami on Saturday, it was best to spend both nights of our "travel contingency" Florida stop in one place. We took the TriRail train from FLL to the end of the line station at MIA. ($3.75 pp).
From the Miami airport station, we had just a 3 block walk to the new Staybridge Suites Hotel. Being cheapskates, we favor places with kitchenettes so we can make our own dinner. So after check-in, we walked 1.5 miles to the nearest neighborhood market, but found that it did not offer much more than snacks. From there, it was 2 miles to "Fresco" (formerly Winn-Dixie) Supermarket where we found a good supply of fresh foods and adult beverages to supply our needs for two nights. We splurged on a local bus to come back to our hotel. ($2.25 pp)
The next post will likely be on Sunday, during a very long layover in Buenos Aires before our connecting flight to Asuncion, Paraguay where we will begin a two week, mostly clockwise, land trip throughout that country. We are already becoming re-acquainted with spanish; it is the default language everywhere in Miami.
